note-taking strategies

Note-taking strategies
How to get your class notes into shape
Getting the most out of high school and college means studying hard and using your time in class wisely. An effective note-taking strategy can help you do both. Here are the basics.
Stay organized
It may seem obvious, but your class notes can only help you if you can find them. When you’re taking notes be sure to:
·         Keep all of your notes in one place.
·         Date and number pages; keeping them in order make them easier to understand them later
Before class
Review the materials assigned for that class period thoroughly. Bring a list of any questions you may have.

“You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is right.”

Reflection: if you are choosing the right, nobody will tell you something negative because you’re making right decisions. If your choosing the wrong then you should be fearful because people will try to stop you.

Student success statement
“if it is not right, do not do it: if it is not true, don’t do it.”
Marcus Aurelius
Roman emperor from 161 AD to 180 AD
reflection: if you know that something’s wrong you shouldn’t do it because you know that its not right. If you know that something is false then don’t say it because you don’t know who it could hurt. And you must always choose the right.

Student success statement
“its better to be alone than to be in bad company”
ANON
Reflection: this post is saying that if your alone you’re always going to be choosing the right, and if you’re always choosing the right people will want to be near you. If you’re with bad company, you’re going to eventually start to choose the wrong, and if you choose the wrong no one will want to be around you.

10 time management skills for students

10 time management tips for students
Tips 1-4
Organize your life                                                                                                                                                                            manage your time well is an important element of success --- especially if you’re a student. If you set priorities that fit your needs and lifestyle, you have a better chance of achieving your goals. Here are some tips for taking control of your time and organizing your life.
Tip 1. Make a to-do list every day.                                                                                                                                            Put things that are the most important at the top and do them first. And don’t forget to reward yourself for your accomplishments.
Tip 2. Use spare minutes wisely.                                                                                                                                                               When you’re commuting on a train or bus, use the time to get some reading done.
Tip 3. It’s ok to say no.                                                                                                                                                                   if your friend asks you to the movies on Thursday night, and you have an exam the next morning, realize that its ok to say no. keep your- and long-term priorities in mind
Tip 4. Find the right time.
You’ll work more efficiently if you figure out when you do your best work. For example, if your brain handles math better in the afternoon, don’t wait to do it until late night.

tips from college students

Tips from college students
Tips for high school students to prepare for college.
1.)    Be prepared to do a lot of reading in college.
2.)    Learn time management: use a calendar and plan how to use your time. Learn to manage your time while still in high school, keep a calendar of all exams and paper due dates.
3.)    One of the biggest transitions between high school and college is development of time management skills – students must learn to balance school and social life.]
4.)    Be prepared to discipline yourself, as the temptation to slack could be great. If you miss 4-5 classes in a semester, you may not make it through the semester successfully.
5.)    Being sick affects your ability to be a student- and remember that the community living contributes to the cold/flu season.
6.)    Learn to read- summarize and outline read
7.)    Learn to take notes in class

Advice from university of Portland students
1.)    “I think of the most important thing to let high school students know is not to overlook anything. When I was in high school I often asked myself, “why do I need to know this?” then I didn’t think that it was permanent, I wouldn’t bother to study it. But in college all those unneeded tool come together in real life (e.g.: finding an intersection of those two lines in algebra is later important in cost calculations.). in the way of classes, learning to read and write well is very important. The focus should be on the format and clarifying ideas in writing (the testable facts). Volunteering and join clubs of important to get into the college of your choice.”

7 habits of highly successful teens

7 habits of highly successful teens
Habit 7: sharpen the saw                                                                                                                                                                      3.) heart: always do what is right so your heart and conscience, will feel peaceful. When you do wrong, your conscience will prick you and create a regretful sensation within your heart. When you do what you honestly feel, you wont have any regrets. Your heart is an internal compass---it gives you direction and discernment. Just like a magnetic compass gives you direction,  even tyue north, your personal compass, your heart, will point you in the true north, the exact path you need to go on.
4.) soul: study scriptures and other sacred literature daily. In other words, feed your spirit because your spirit needs spiritual food just like your physical body needs temporal food to survive. Pondering, meditating, and reflecting are great soul-sharpening activities. Try writing your thoughts, feelings, aspirations, concerns, and decisions in a diary or journal. Writing helps you focus and make good decisions.
Get  into the habit of daily improving your body (physical fitness), your mid, your heart, and soul

7 habits of highly successful teens

7 habits of highly successful teens
Habit 6: synergize
Synergy is achieved when two or more people work together to create something better that they could have created alone.  Through this habit, teens learn it doesn’t have to be “your way” or “my way” but rather a better way, a higher way. Synergy allows teens to value differences and better appreciate others. Synergy is the reward, the delicious fruit you’ll taste as you get better at living the other habits, especially at thinking win-win and seeking first to understand. Learning to synergize is like learning to do the v formations with others instead of flying through life solo. You’ll be amazed at how faster and much farther you’ll go. Synergy doesn’t just happen. It’s a process. You have to get there. And the foundation of getting there is: learning to celebrate differences.
A good band is a great example of synergy. It’s not just the drums, or the guitar, or the vocalists, It’s all of them together that make up the music. Each band member brings
his or her strengths to the table to create something better than each could have done alone. No instrument is more important than the other. Just different

7 habits of highly successful students

7 habits of highly successful teens
Habit 3
Habit 3: put things first
Habit three is about will and will not power. This habit helps teens prioritize and manage  their time so that they focus on and complete the most important things in their lives. Putting first things first also means to learn how to overcome fears and being strong during difficult times. Its not living life according to what matters most. Putting things first  that deals with things that are:                                                     important or not important , urgent or not urgent. Lets look at the four quadrants of time management
1)      Things that are important and urgent
2)      Things that are important but not urgent
3)      Things that are not important but urgent
4)      Things that are not important and not urgent
1. important and urgent
2. important but not urgent
3. not important but urgent
4. not important but urgent
Quadrant 2is the ideal place to spend our time, doing things that is important but not urgent. Heres where priorities come to play. The results for living quadrant 2 are:
1)      Control of your life
2)      Balance
3)      High performance
So, in what quadrant are you spending most of your time? The key is to switch the most important things first, things that matter most. Keep your eyes on the prize and reach for it.

student success statement

Student success statement
“The only difference between those who have failed and those who have succeeded lies in the difference of their habits. Good habits are the key to success. Bad habits are the unlocked doors to failure. Thus, the first law I will obey, which precede all others is ---‘I will form good habits and become their slave.’”
Og Mandino
Reflection: this post is saying the people who fail and succeed have the same learning tool. But some people don’t know or don’t bother to use them. Is you want to succeed all you need to do is pay attention, your going to be in school either way so might as well learn something.

7 habits of highly successful students

7 habits of highly successful teens
habit one
Habit 1: be proactive.
Being proactive is the key to unlocking the other habits. Help your teen to take control and responsibility for their own happiness or unhappiness. They don’t blame others for their own actions or feelings. Proactive people realize that the ball is in their court that they are the captains of their own ships; that they are in control of their decisions, thoughts, choices, goals, actions, and priority. Proactive people are self-starters; they don’t wait to be told what to do, they press forward with enthusiasm toward the achievement of their assignment, their duties, there responsibilities, their obligations. Choosing to do what is right is a proactive decision. Obey the rule. Obey the laws. Obey the coach. Obey the school. Obey your parents. Obey with exactness, and then great things will come to you. Be proactive and take initiative.

successful students

Successful students
9
9. … don’t cram for exams. Successful students know that divided periods of study are more effective than cram sessions, and they practice it.
If there is one thing that study skill specialists agree on, it is that distributive study is better than massed, late-night, last-ditch efforts known as cramming. You’ll learn more and remember more and also earn a higher grade by studying in four, one hour-a-night sessions for Friday’s exam than studying on Thursday for four hours. Short, concentrated preparatory efforts are more efficient and rewarding  than wasteful, inattentive, last moment marathons. Yet, so many students fail to learn this lesson and end up repeating it over and over again until it becomes a wasteful habit. Not to clever, huh?
When you cram, you’re taking the short cut, and short cuts never really produce any real worthwhile results. Also, when you could have done better but you didn’t. shortcuts cut you short. You cant plant watermelon seeds and then harvest them the next day. It takes time. Cramming for a test or project and expecting to get a high score the next day is like planting a watermelon seed and planning to harvest and eat the fresh fruit the next day. Plus cramming for a test doesn’t help you academically, so why even do it? Plan ahead, prepare ahead. Give yourself plenty of days and weeks to prepare for upcoming accountability opportunities.

successful students

7. …understand that actions affect learning. Successful students know there personal behavior affect their feeling and emotions which can affect learning.
If you act in a certain way that normally produces particular feelings, you will begin to feel those feelings. Act like your bored and you’ll produce those feelings. Act like your disinterested and you’ll become disinterested. So the next time you have trouble concentrating in the class room, “act” like an interested person: lean forward, place your feet flat on the floor, and maintain eye contact with the professor, nod occasionally, take notes, and ask questions. Not only will you benefit directly from your actions, your classmates and professors may get more enthusiastic and exited.
8. …talk about what they’re learning. Successful students get to learn something well enough that they can put it into their own words. Talking about something, with friends or classmates, is not only good for checking whether or not that you know something, it’s a proven learning tool. Transferring ideas into words is the most direct path into moving knowledge from short-term to long-term memory. You don’t really “know” material until you put it into words. So, next time that you study, don’t do it silently. Talk about notes, problems, readings, etc. With friends, recite to a chair, organize an oral study group, pretend that your teaching your peers. “talk-learning” produces a whole host of memory traces that result in more learning

Work Together Part 1

Work Together Part 1
I can and will work as part of the team as long as everyone in the team is willing to do his work. I don’t like having to pick up the slack, but I will if I know that my grade will be harmed otherwise. My greatest academic success was in my first semester when I had to write a 10-12 page research paper. It was the longest paper I had ever been assigned and I was a little scared. Also, it was the first paper where they were like; here you go, just write about something. I had to argue in favor of or against something, but it could be anything from the sky is blue to hypnotism. I wrote mine on hypnotism. I worked on this paper for weeks and weeks. Every night I would be doing research or writing. I put so much effort into this paper. It ended up being just fewer than 12 pages but it was full on information. I turned it in and when I got it back a week or so later, I had received the first A+ of my college career. All my hard work paid off because I got the grade I deserved. I was really happy and proud of myself.
